I’ve noticed that this year there seems to be a focus on a word for the year rather than big goals to be accomplished. Maybe it’s just a fad and next year will be something else. It did not take me long to figure out the word I wanted to focus on this year: “PRODUCTIVITY”. I have found myself spending way too much time this past year on things that don’t add twinkle to my tiara. This year, I hope that will change and at the end of the year, I can look back on my 2019 tiara and admire all the bling I’ve been able to add to it.
Last week I sat down and listed all of the things that I do that don’t produce results that get me closer to what I want to accomplish in the coming year. It sounds easy, but it was difficult being honest with myself. I rated each item on my list by how much time they were taking up and how much I enjoyed doing them. I decided to cut one of these things every week for the next 12 weeks. I know myself too well to know that I would rebel against myself if I tried to cut them all out at once.
Okay, so maybe I listen to wayyyy too many Disney and motivational podcasts. I try to tell myself that I do other things while I listen to them, but if I’m being honest with myself, I know that doing two things at once really slows me down. Did I say how hard it is being honest with myself?
A second place I knew that I needed to cut back on was the time I spend checking social media and e-mails. I have set four times during the day and evening to check e-mails. I need to check them a bit more often than Facebook just to be sure I’m not missing anything important for work. I have also unsubscribed from a lot of e-mail lists over the past week so I don’t get so many every day.
As far as social media goes, for the time being I have decided to check only twice during the day. It’s difficult because I love to see what everyone is up to and how their families are. Unfortunately, often my feed is filled with things that are far too distracting. When I get some time, I’ve got to get better and changing the settings in Facebook so that my feed looks more indicative of what I want to see.
By far the largest thing I have decided to let go of this year is my travel business. I am keeping my licenses and certifications current so I can still book family and close friends. I love to help people plan their vacations, but I don’t like being on call 24/7 for clients. The amount of time spent working on the website, keeping up on all the cruise and tour specials going on, and deadlines for clients just wasn’t fun. Instead, I will increase the amount of time spent on my transcription business. I’ve been doing it for so long and love the content which I get to work on all the time. It’s definitely a win-win for me this year.
I am really excited to see what the coming year brings. I have already watched what I can get done in a day go up significantly as I have eliminated just a few things that I was doing without even thinking. I am keeping track of everything I get done and taking the time to celebrate the little things. I am seeing a few more jewels in my tiara already. Baby steps are all the bling in 2019!!!
